If nobody has noticed the ports/net/samba-devel is now at 3.0.0 no more beta in there.. where the normal samba is still at 2.9.8 or something close to that..

My guess it they want people to continue testing 3 before updating the main port.. but it's there for who wants it

Actually when they compared Samba 2 to Windoze Server 2000, Windoze was faster.

Not a big deal anyway, if you go the MS site they pretend that Server 2000 doesn't exist anymore. Everything points you to Server 2003, in fact when I went to the IT week article I got a pop up ad that was something for Server 2003. MS is pushing Server 2003 like there is no tomorrow.

I've been meaning to post about this for a bit, but I have been swamped at work lately.

I originally rolled out samba-2.2.8a with openldap-2.0.27 running on a PDC on our network. It has run extremely well for us. The only thing is that it is running on RH 7.3. I'd really like to see how this would run on a *BSD box.
I'm slowly tearing down the walls with managment here and letting them know just how good *BSD is. For instance, I recently sent them to www.netcraft.com to do some 'light' reading to show the power of *BSD. Wouldn't you know it, their curiosity as really peaked here.

Basically, here is what im getting at. I'm going to redo our PDC, only this time it will be running Samba 3 and openldap 2.1.23 and rewriting my How-to for this. It super excited about Samba 3 and all of the new items it has.

Give me about 3-4 weeks to roll this out, and I should have it completed and the documentation done.

Cheers,

Have you finished writing a How-to on Samba 3 yet?

I'm trying to look for good info on How-Tos for Samba 3. Some links I found on samba but they are outdated. :?

Well I guess depending on how cheap you are, you can browse the entire offical samba-3 How-To at amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0131453556/ref=sib_dp_pt/002-2572206-8176827#reader-page

Kind of slow going and you can't skip pages. But it's better then nothing.

Not yet. Im doing some testing with samba and LDAP. Right now, 3.0.0 has quite a few bugs, so I am waiting for the release of 3.0.1. I would recommend the same for others if they are planning on putting up a samba 3.0 box in a production environment.

As soon as Im done, i'll post it in the How-To section.

Could you perhaps elaborate on the bugs you're finding in Samba 3.0.0? I'm interested in putting Samba 3 in a production environment, and I'd like to hear both failure and success stories.
