I used to use xchat but then I discovered the goodness of a cli client and screen. I tried a few text based clients (even the text version of xchat) and stopped my search when I found irssi. Irssi is very flexible and has great defaults out of the box.
Other clients can do the job too but they generally need to be tweaked to be as nice as irssi. Of course this is all a matter of personal taste.

I cant decide between BitchX, irssi, and XChat. Why do you use one over the other? (I currently use all 3 depending on what machine Im on...)

Well, I migrated over to irssi. Seemed to like IPv6 a lot better than BitchX. One of these days I'll get it working right. :P
