Cant seem to get the config file right yet. Anyone have any tips? All I get is a barcode type display. I have it set at default settings as well. 640x480, 8 colors I think.

X --configure works great for me. I add monitor refresh and default color depth and copy it into place and it has worked for me everytime.

Got it, had to comment out 'chipset' and it then worked. Rather odd but nonetheless.
