We need to create some excitement in this community. I feel that it needs a kickstart. It seems we've (myself at least) have become complacent. Who's got some ideas of some cool stuff we can do? And... is anyone else feeling that way or is it just me?

funny you should mention this...i'm just in the process of moving, and wanted to try out a few projects once i was settled in. one idea was a radio station for SE members, that they could listen to, and contribute to. there were some more prizes in the box, but i will get everything down properly in 2 weeks time.

great idea though...

That's a great idea maybe a monthly audio mag. You know featuring all sorts of crap tutorials, news, articles, and lots of tomfoolery.

Hell I could even be the host with my silky smooth suave voice , errr ... maybe not.

I was thinking you could do the same crap linuxjunior does with their front page, you know that pane on the right hand side, and allow users to add news and stuff.

Id like to see a "Sexy Hack of the Month" section, where we highlight really cool things that can be done with BSD. In the minds eye, there would be prizes, but I cant think of a good way to do it without writing digital b33r

A way for newbies to connect directly to a live chat on the site itself? Just a suggestion...
I'd like to see some Windows/commercial software replacement projects/how-tos but I'm biased because I'm working w/ Windows every day. Things are getting better. They're going to buy me a 1U box for file backups, sysadmin stuff. Thinking about a Dell Poweredge 650 running FreeBSD

I like a lot of the ideas I've read so far. An electronic Magazine seems real cool. The hack of the month also seems very very cool.

A think for an electronic magazine a quarterly issue should be good. The hack of the month thing could be in a new section of the site.

And yes vlad I do need to be around more in irc. ;)

I'll see what I can do.

We need to create some excitement in this community. [...] Who's got some ideas [...]
Two words: RSS feed.

An RSS feed of the most recent 20 posts would do wonders to bring in new eyes and participants. You'd probably have to hack the PHP code, unless phpBB already has this feature. But that's a juicy bit of hacking to get the blood flowing. :-)

PHP supports xml, and there are some great opensource examples around. There, it's 3/4 done already. ;-)

indeed... RSS/XML feeds really drive up the traffic to a site.. i think mine's more than doubled since i intruduced a rss feed... definatly a good idea... but a pain in the ass to implement and get it to validate.
