I ran "use.perl port" on yet another box and then I wondered if I could turn off building the system perl in make.conf so I peeked at /etc/defaults/make.conf and saw this disheartening comment about SSL

#NOPERL= true # do not build perl. Disables OpenSSL optimizations

Do you get SSL optimizations if you set NOPERL=YES when configured to use the perl from ports?
