is there an FAQ somewhere or a quick how to for setting up Ports on Free 4.10? i heard this was a forum that was pretty forgiving to newbies, hence this post.

in the mean time, i will go googling...

You've gotten the packages all taken care of, but ports are slightly different. The FreeBSD handbook is the best resource for this information:

That's adding a binary package and not really ports. pkg_add is a wonderful thing and will work great for you if you don't need to customize your install.

Ports are great and let you tweak a lot of things and I would recomend that you check them out when you get a chance. The FreeBSD handbook at www.freebsd.org is great for all your doc needs.
