This is a rather long but very interesting article on dealing with package upgrading and it touches on many ports topics.

I access this blog on daily basis. It is very clear written and has many FreeBSD and security topics. (also bought author's book *****)

fyi: check this blog latest entries about port/package maintenance. it has many hints how to avoid 'make index' nightmare. (also, author makes some suggestions how to setup your own package builder system)
