my garage got broken into not too long ago and i was thinking a video surveyilence system would be a fun project to setup.

is there any software which allows for online monitoring, and/or more importantly, image capture when motion is detected?

it would be cool if there were other features upon motion detection, such as execution of a script. i could make it text message my phone, .. or better yet, raise the draw bridge and release the gators and hounds! :D

i suppose the other part of this project would be getting the video feed into the computer. i am at the drawing board on this one.

anyone have any links or knowledge of this topic?

Check out this post: http://www.screamingelectron.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1723

Basically, all you should need is a couple of brooktree based cards (BKTR(4) http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=bktr&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+5.3-RELEASE+and+Ports&format=html) http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=15-100-103&depa=0 might be overkill but this is what I have.

I ended up installing slackware linux so that I could use ZoneMinder http://www.zoneminder.com. You may be able to find something that works for FreeBSD (if so, tell me about it). ZoneMinder had most of the features that I was looking for but the Video4Linux2 stuff makes it a PITA to do on FreeBSD.
