:smileyb: I installed kde on the xfree desktop configuration. But I don't know how to get into it. When I type startx I am taken into the default twm manager.

You need to add a .xinitrc in your home directory. Assuming your home is newbie, then you'd add /home/newbie/.xinitrc
Then add the following to the file
exec startkde
that's it. :)
Thanks for signing up newbie.

What do I need to type to get into kde after I have done that. I setup the file. But when I type startx it just takes me into the same thing. I thought maybe I was supposed to type startkde.
But when I do that I just get a message that it couldn't connect to xserver. I appreciate the info I have recieved and any further assistance that can be provided.

 Well the instructions you gave worked after all. I was logged in as root. And finally I got to thinking maybe if I login as the regular user and done that it would work. So I did and followed your instructions and they worked. I am a lowly mandrake user
just getting started with freebsd. So I really appreciate the info. Thanks!!
