Andreas Marx is a reliable source. He posted this to Bugtraq; the upshot is: migrate off Windows 98 and 98SE asap because it will quickly become a target for worms & viruses.

I was just wondering what has happened with MS03-034, because Windows 98
was not listed as platform anymore (in the section "Platforms not
affected"), only Windows Me. This usually means, that this platform is not
supported any longer and no further patches will be provided anymore. I
contacted Microsoft and they told me, that this is the case with Windows
98/98 SE:

According to their lifecycle policy
(;[ln];lifeprodw) the
free-of-charge support period has ended 30-Jun-2003. But I always thought
that they will still be releasing security updates until the
end-of-life-period, which is, according to the above website, 16-Jan-2004.

However, I was wrong. So, if you're still using Windows 98/98 SE you should
switch to an other OS very soon. I'm sure that new security vulnerabilities
will be discovered on this platform and due to the fact, that there will be
no more security updates, the use of Windows 98 will get more and more
risky every day. Virus authors will adopt these security vulnerabilities
soon to get their nasty malwares spreading faster than ever. And without a
proper fix from MS, you will run into big trouble.

If a Blaster-like worm will be released that affected Win 9x platforms, you
won't be able to use your computer anymore, because there will be no fix
for it. No av program would help you much, because they can only stop
dropped files, but not the exploit itself. You have lost. You will need to
switch to a more recent OS. And you have to pay for it...

It was only a matter of time. They always do this eventually.

Ahhh well, I honestly wonder how many people on here actually use systems that run 98? heh *throws up*

September 10th, 2003, 23:22
Well it's ugly but hey you asked:

Windows 150074 71.7 %
OpenBSD 16224 7.7 %
FreeBSD 14952 7.1 %
Linux 14734 7 %
Macintosh 10444 4.9 %
Unknown 2351 1.1 %
Sun Solaris 147 0 %
NetBSD 71 0 %
OS/2 45 0 %
Unknown Unix system 2 0 %

Those are the O.S. stats for the current month. Ugly, but you did ask.

What sick twisted person is running OS/2????

September 10th, 2003, 23:31
by the end of the month we'll have some pdas and some webtv hitting us to. We always do.

September 10th, 2003, 23:33
I just checked my stats, and to answer your questions dave, I'm seeing plenty of hits from 98... worse, I've got a number from 95!

I was kinda pissed that they stopped early but I came across the following:

I've received a lot of replies about how windows 98 is no longer supported because
of the EOL cycle, however I've also received replies from Microsoft people monitoring
the bugtraq forum that security updates *are* supported.

Also, the replies I have received indicate this same problem with a security update
either not installing or getting detected occurs on any windows platform related
to any one of the recent security updates.

I have an email sent in to Microsoft and I'll update the list here when I get a response.

A bit OT but dude, that guy with all the MSIE -> posts, is he like grammer disabled? :D

Here's a nice post with Firebird on Irix for your logs. I'm suprised how well it works on a 180Mhz cpu and 64mb of ram. 8)

I'm probably %40 of those Windows hits currently!

September 11th, 2003, 01:59
Heh, I'll admit 2k hits, only due to it being my workstation at work and having to need it for some specific tasks. Ahhh well, I can't have everything =P But hey, could be worse, it's not like i'm being forced to run ME on this box =)

hugh nicks

ME?! Sweet Enola Gay son.....don't you know ME stands for MAY EXPLODE? then there's the fine print at the bottom of the box. (replace May with Will.)

Hmmm 71% I didn't think it was that high. But I only use windows because it has more of the programs I use on a daily basis.
On another note I have recently replaced my Win2K Adv. server with and open BSD server. It was mainly just for hosting webpages and remote file storage but win2k would act up anytime I sent more than 1gb across the network to it. So I replaced it with OBSD, 2 WD120gb HDs and loaded samba -- works like a charm.
